Software Requirements ========================================================== ---------------------------------------------------------- Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or Greater ---------------------------------------------------------- To browse the files in this collection, you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or greater installed. To verify what version of the Reader you have installed, launch Reader, select "About Acrobat Reader..." from the "Help" menu. When the splash screen displays, the version number of Acrobat Reader is displayed in the top left corner of the splash screen. It must be 5.0 or greater. In order to take full advantage of the CD-ROM's capabilities, you must use a version of Acrobat Reader that includes the "Search" plug-in. This enables full-text searching across documents contained in this collection. The "Search" plug-in is included in the Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 installation on this CD-ROM. ---------------------------------------------------------- Verification for "SEARCH" ---------------------------------------------------------- If you already have Acrobat Reader installed on your system, and you would like to maximize the usefulness of this CD-ROM, you will want to verify that you have the "Search" plug-in installed. This can be accomplished by launching Reader and checking either the Acrobat Reader Toolbar for the "Search" icon (binoculars with a piece of paper in the background) or by dropping down the Tools menu and looking for the "Search" menu item. If these options exist, "Search" is installed. If you do not have these options, you may want to proceed with one of the following: 1. Install Acrobat Reader according to the instructions in Section 2 of this README. "Search" will automatically be installed with Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0. 2. Use this CD without having "Search" capabilities. ---------------------------------------------------------- Smartlink Plug-in for Adobe Acrobat Reader ---------------------------------------------------------- The Smartlink Plug-in is used for links across the CD-ROMs in this collection. The plug-in is automatically installed if you install Acrobat Reader from this CD-ROM. If you do not wish to install Acrobat Reader from this disc, the plug-in can be installed manually. For these instructions, see the appropriate section below. Currently, the plug-in is supported on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. Other users are limited to browsing the abstracts on this CD-ROM or by using the stand-alone electronic guides on the individual collection CD-ROMs to view the articles. Further instructions are provided under Section 3's "Accessing articles without the Smartlink Plug-in." Note: In your Adobe Acrobat Reader Preferences, uncheck "Certified Plugins Only." Restart Adobe Acrobat Reader. ================================================ Section 2. This is typically located in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader\plug_ins folder. 3. Remove the "Read-Only" attribute from the smlnk32.api file. This can be accomplished by right mouse clicking on the smlnk32.api file in Explorer or My Computer. Choose the "Properties" menu item. Uncheck the "Read-Only" attribute and click the "OK" button. 4. In your Adobe Acrobat Reader Preferences, uncheck "Certified Plugins Only." Restart Adobe Acrobat Reader. ============================================= Section 3. Using Features ============================================= We recommend viewing the Getting Started section provided in MTT023.PDF to familiarize yourself with the navigation buttons and tools used by the electronic guide and Acrobat Reader. In addition, the Acrobat Reader Online Guide also provides essential information. ----------------------------------------------------------- Recommendations for Optimal Performance ----------------------------------------------------------- In order to take full advantage of the performance capabilities of this collection, and because this archive spans multiple CD-ROMs, we recommend that you do the following. 1. Launch Reader and go to Edit/Preferences/Search. Change the following preferences: *Select the Document Information option. This allows the Title, Author, Keywords, and Subject fields to be visible when specifying search criteria. *Change "Show First 100 Documents" to "Show First 1000 Documents". (Type in "1000" in the field provided.) This allows the maximum number of hits to be displayed during a search. *Using the drop-down list in the "Next Highlight" field, select "No Highlighting". This is necessary for all searches executed from the Master Index CD-ROM to operate properly. Edit/Preferences/Options - Uncheck "Certified Plugins Only." Restart Adobe Acrobat Reader. 2. If you have the resources, placing the Master Index CD- ROM on a second CD-ROM drive, your local hard drive or on a network will increase the performance of cross-CD linking. If only one CD-ROM drive is available, to view the contents of a paper you will need to eject the Master Index CD-ROM and insert the requested CD-ROM. When you return to the Master Index (generally by using the History button), you will be prompted to reinsert the Master Index CD-ROM. To place the Master Index on your hard drive, create a directory and then copy the entire contents from the Master Index CD-ROM to that directory. If you place the Master Index on your network hard drive or CD-ROM drive, you must map a local drive letter to the shared device on the network for each workstation accessing the MTT collection. All access to any MTT disc over a network must be done through a local drive letter and not through Network Neighborhood. Please consult your Network Administrator for help on mapping a local drive letter to a network device. ----------------------------------------------------------- Navigating through the Collection using the Smartlink Plug-in ----------------------------------------------------------- With this collection of CD-ROMs, ICPI has implemented a new feature which allows linking across CD-ROMs. The Master Index CD-ROM includes links to all of the papers published by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society from 1953 through 2001. There are two methods for getting to papers. One is by simply going through the guide, finding a paper by it's title or author, reading the abstract, and then clicking on the paper title. This will prompt you for the collection CD-ROM that contains the paper. Once the CD-ROM has initialized, the paper will be displayed. Going back to the Master Index is accomplished by simply clicking on the "Back" button on the Reader Toolbar. You will be prompted to re-insert the Master Index CD (MASTER_IDX4). If you have multiple CD-ROM drives or if the collection is on your Network, the papers will be found automatically without requiring intervention by the user.* The second method for getting to papers is just as simple. The Acrobat Index that is attached to the Master Index electronic guide contains all the text for every paper written from 1953 through 2001. When you conduct a search, the Search Results list will display the paper title for every paper in the collection that contains the word or combination of words for which you searched. Selecting a title from the list and clicking "View" will show the abstract for the paper. Click on the paper title within the abstract screen and a prompt for the collection CD-ROM that contains that paper will appear. Place the corresponding CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. Once the CD-ROM has initialized, the paper will be displayed. When you are finished viewing the selected paper, you can either use the History button, or you can use File/Close and then go to File/MTT023.PDF, either of which will prompt you to insert the Master Index CD-ROM. When the CD is initialized, you can access your Search Results list. From there, you can select a different paper. Once again you'll be shown the abstract for the paper; clicking on the title will prompt you to insert the CD-ROM that contains the paper.* When navigating back or forward via the "Back" and "Forward" buttons on the Acrobat Reader Toolbar, you will be prompted to insert the collection CD-ROM that is needed to display that particular content. If you do not wish to go back through all of the collection CD-ROMs, you can select "Cancel" when the dialog box is displayed which requested the CD-ROM. Canceling will erase Reader's memory of where you have been. The "Back" and "Forward" arrows on the Toolbar will become grayed-out. When desiring to find papers in the archive on a particular topic or by a particular author, use the Master Index CD-ROM disc and conduct searches. This will provide you with the most comprehensive list of available papers and ensure that you will find the paper you are looking for with the most ease. Note: Only the 1997 and greater collection CD-ROMs (MTT020 and higher) have links to papers via "Subjects." Launch the Electronic Guide on these collection CD- ROMs to locate papers by subjects. ----------------------------------------------------------- Accessing Articles without the Smartlink Plug-in ----------------------------------------------------------- If you are not using the Smartlink Plug-in, you will need to make note of the citation information provided on the abstract. When viewing an abstract, look at the citation information provided underneath the title. By cross-referencing the publication year with the dates listed on the labels of the CD-ROMs in the collection, or referencing the list below, you can select which disc to access for the paper. For example, if the paper you want to view was published in 1960, you would pull the CD-ROM labeled MTT001 which contains the years 1953 through 1961. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive and double click on the MTT001.PDF file in the root directory. At that point, you can find the paper by navigating through the electronic guide or by executing a search. (Each CD-ROM in the collection has its own electronic guide and index that includes the publications produced during the time frame noted on the disc label.) The following listing of the contents for each CD-ROM in the MTT Digital Archive collection may prove useful. CD-ROM Information ========================================================== This material was published using Adobe(TM) Acrobat(TM) technology to create portable document format (PDF) files. This CD-ROM is in ISO 9660 format. Included on MTT023 are versions of Acrobat Reader + Search for Microsoft Windows(R) (95, 98, NT, 2000, and XP), Apple Macintosh, and UNIX [Digital Unix, IBM AIX(R), SGI Irix, HP Unix(TM), Sun Sparc]. ----------------------------------------------------------- Optical Character Recognition ----------------------------------------------------------- The PDFs contained on this CD-ROM were created using Acrobat Capture search technology, either by scanning printed pages or by converting electronic files. In the scanning process, the actual printed pages of the documentation are scanned to create both an image of each page as well as optical character recognition (OCR) data. What you see on your computer monitor or on the page that you print through Acrobat Reader is a rendering of the image, while the OCR data is used behind the scenes for search purposes. Since some images may have been generated from printed pages, the quality may not be as good as when input is from digital sources. In many cases, greater than 100 percent magnification is required to read documents online. Pages printed at 100 percent magnification are easy to read, however. Image quality will also vary depending on the resolution of your monitor. To improve the quality of the image, try activating the option Smooth text and Monochrome Images found in the Acrobat Reader under Edit/Preferences/General menu. Note: This may effect screen refresh speed. See Troubleshooting Tips below. The accuracy of the image on your screen or of the printed page should mirror the accuracy of the original page. When you conduct full-text searches, however, the results will vary. Characters that are not recognized successfully during the OCR process are bitmapped, and words containing such characters cannot be searched successfully. They also cannot be copied and printed into word processing software pages without some loss of data. ========================================================== Section 5. Troubleshooting ========================================================== Q: When I did a search, and selected a title to view, the message "Could not make text selection for page..." came up. A: You will need to change your Search preferences for "No Highlighting". (In Reader, go to Edit/Preferences/Search. Using the drop-down list under the "Highlight" field, select "No Highlighting".) Q: When I print a document, some of the text is cut off. A: Select Shrink oversized pages to paper size under File/Print. This will capture the entire image on to your print out. Q: (Macintosh users) When I do a search, I get a message "An internal error has occurred. Can't retrieve the results. Sorry." A: This is a known Adobe problem. It occurs when a search is conducted on a group of files in which the first 64 characters of some titles are identical. Because this is such a large collection of papers, some paper titles begin identically. Please see Help/Reader Help and Searching indexes under the Contents bookmark to narrow the search parameters and avoid this from happening. Q: Screen refresh and printing takes an extraordinarily long time on my system. A: Under Edit/Preferences/General, turn off the option for Smooth Text & Monochrome Images. Q: When I open the file for the guide, I only get part of the opening image. For example, I see bookmarks on the left hand side of the screen, but nothing on the right. A: You are using an earlier version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Install Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 from this CD (see Section 2. Installation Instructions). ========================================================== ========================================================== This CD-ROM was produced by InControl Productions, Inc.
